‘A taste of LIPA’ Summer School 2002

“MAKING MOVIES” with Hurricane Films

Hurricane Films ran a two week film school this summer in conjunction with the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). Nine students, from varying backgrounds took part. The group had just two weeks in which to come up with an idea for a short film, write it, shoot it and edit it. The group pulled it off with a lot of hard work and “Palookaville Nights” was created.

Most of the students on the course had never been involved in a film project before. The course tutor, Tony Lloyd, took them through all the stages of production and by the end of two weeks, each of the students had tried their hand at writing, planning camera work, sound, lighting and editing. Some of the students have gone on to further work in the industry, either on training placements or running for local production companies. Hurricane helped one student, Paul Devine, to attain a camera operator traineeship, flying out to New York and LA to learn from experienced professionals.

UNDER THE MUD

Hurricane Films community based feature film project
www.underthemud.com

Hurricane films is currently running a feature film screenwriting project with a group of young people from Liverpool, The project began in early 2002, when Hurricane approached a youth-led community centre in the Speke Garston area, 'Interchill'.

Young people from Interchill and many more since have become involved with the project over the last year, originating the idea and characters for the film. Over the last few months, the core writing group has cemented the plot and characters and written the treatment, with the backing of CAMEO, a youth empowerment organisation based in LIPA.
